Digital media archiving on the
internet – from the idea to the website
Today content owners are presumable the kings. But, who hasn't encountered
the problem of cellars and archives crammed with all different kinds
of material? Defective perforation, film rolls totally infested with
fungus, not to mention the videotapes that are full of dropouts. As
soon as an editor looks for a particular programme or clipping, the
big search begins.
In order to protect conventional archives from ageing as well as
wear and tear it is necessary to copy the material in regular time
intervals. A procedure that is quite costly. However, the alternative
to all this, is to archive everything in digitalized computer compatible
formats. A central database system is the basis for an efficient
administration of the video library and thus its successful exploitation.
A computer assisted library system is also able to serve as a source
for background information and can therefore improve the media product's
profile. It gets even better, if the library system is accessible
through the internet, to enable a preferably big and independent
group od users to access the content.
